Precious Metal Clay (PMC)

PreExplore this innovative new material. Learn how to texture, shape, fire and finish your original pendants and earrings in fine silver. PMC feels like ordinary clay, but contains fine particles of silver, once fired, the organic matter burns away leaving silver which can be hallmarked 99.9% silver.

Some years ago, Rohana heard of a product that was as pliable as clay yet fired to produce pure silver. Rohana's expertise in Precious Metal Clay (PMC) began to grow. Precious Metal Clay is an exciting material developed in the 1990s by Mitsubishi Materials of Japan. Microscopic particles of silver are mixed with a moist binder to create a material that has the feel and working properties of modeling clay. Using simple tools, objects are easily given shape, texture, and character. After air-drying, the objects are heated to temperatures approaching the melting point of the metal, where the particles fuse together to make a dense, fully metallic object.

Fired Precious Metal Clay work can be polished, soldered, enameled, and enjoyed like any other silver item. Precious Metal Clay is available in three different versions of silver and in a 22k gold alloy. There is also a newly launched BronzClay; join her for a day of stimulating creativity and take home some wonderful, unique jewellery of your own design and making.

Precious Metal Clay is a high tech material and costs more than conventional silver wire and sheet. This is balanced by the amazing speed with which forms can be made. Also, Precious Metal Clay can be rehydrated before firing, so there is no waste.
